THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL’S RIFFE GALLERY EXPLORES MIDWEST IMPRESSIONISM IN NEW EXHIBITION

The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery presents Midwestern Visions of Impressionism: 1890 – 1930 until October 12, 2008.

This exhibition takes a fresh look at the American Impressionism movement through the paintings of 31 artists born or raised in the Midwest and working between 1890 and 1930. In addition to bringing attention to the often overlooked talent of Ohio, Illinois and Indiana; Midwestern Visions of Impressionism explores where these artists fit within the larger context of American Impressionism and how their regions informed their painting.

Artists in the exhibition include: John Ottis Adams, George Adomeit, George Ames Aldrich, May Ames, Otto Bacher, L. Clarence Ball, Karl Albert Buehr, V.J. Cariani, William Clusmann, Frank Virgil Dudley, Maude Eggemeyer, William J. Forsyth, Alexis Jean Fournier, Marie Goth, Frederick Gottwald, Carl Graf, Louis Oscar (L.O.) STILL TIME TO ENTER JURIED ART SHOW
The Columbus Metropolitan Library, Friends of the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the OAC's Ohio Online Visual Artist Registry Present Third Annual Juried Art Show.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library, Ohio Arts Council and Friends of the Library have once again partnered to bring arts opportunities to artists and the public by presenting a juried art show at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Main Library. In 1998 the two organizations collaborated to create the Ohio Online Visual Artist Registry (OOVAR), a database that showcases the work of more than 700 artists from Ohio and around the world.

The Third Annual Online Visual Artist Registry Juried Art Show will feature original works of art by Ohio artists. Work will be selected through a blind jury process of distinguished art professionals, including professional juror, Ron Kroutel, an Athens area artist who won the 2007 exhibition juror’s choice.

The artwork will be displayed at The Columbus Metropolitan Main Library’s Humanities, Fine Arts and Recreation Division from October 13-November 29, 2008. An award of $1000 will be given for Juror’s Choice. An award of $500 will be presented for People’s Choice. People’s Choice Award ballots will be accepted through November 8. The cash awards are provided by Friends of the Library.

The juried show is open to all living artists of Ohio 18 years of age or older. Entrants must be registered in the Ohio Online Visual Artist Registry. There is no entry fee. Up to three images may be submitted on CD or as slides. Work must be original and created within the past three years. Deadline to apply is August 8, 2008. Additional requirements apply.

OHIO ARTS COUNCIL CALLS FOR LISTINGS FOR THE 2009 OHIO ARTS FESTIVALS AND COMPETITIONS DIRECTORY

The Ohio Arts Council is assembling its 2009 Ohio Arts Festivals and Competitions Directory and invites festivals across Ohio to submit their listings. The directory is a useful guide for artists interested in places to display and sell their work—from traditional crafts to arts on the cutting edge—and for anyone seeking to experience the arts in Ohio.

The directory contains detailed information about arts and crafts festivals and competitions, including dates, activities, number of spaces available for artists to display work, fees and contact information. It is organized by date and location and includes alphabetical indexes of festivals by name, city, region and sponsor.

Organizers or promoters interested in listing their arts festivals or competitions in the 2009 Ohio Arts Festivals and Competitions Directory should fill out the questionnaire found at http://www.maildogmanager.com/link.html?url=55&client=ohioartscouncil&campaign=188&email=##L@##H.

The directory is published by the Ohio Arts Council and distributed in partnership with the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild, Ohio Designer Craftsmen, Ohio Division of Travel and Tourism, Ohio Department of Transportation, Chambers of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureaus and AAA offices around the state. The listings are compiled by Lorz Communications of Columbus.

OHIO RECEIVES MORE THAN $60,000 FROM ARTS MIDWEST PERFORMING ARTS FUND

Arts Midwest is pleased to announce the presenting organizations selected to receive support through the 2008-2009 Performing Arts Fund. Due to the increase of funds received from the NEA, Arts Midwest is pleased to be able to fund all eligible applications received as of May 5, 2008. Ohio organizations received $69,810 from the performing arts fund including organizations such as CityFolk in Dayton, the Wexner Center in Columbus and Cleveland Modern Dance Association in Cleveland. Approximately 200 engagements will be supported nationwide, totaling more than $550,000.

A new component of the program this year is Star Projects. Applications qualifying as a Star Project go beyond the general eligibility requirements of the program by engaging performing artists from the Midwest, deepening participation with community-based residencies, or providing cultural access to specific populations, such as people with disabilities, tribal communities, immigrant communities, at-risk youth, or veterans.
